Learning English as an international student

Most international students are non-native English speakers. The consular office requires that an international student must at least be able to use English in daily conversations. They should be able to engage in academic discussions with their classmates, professors, and other people.

The language barrier must not hinder the international students from achieving their goals. If the English language will not be mastered, it may lead to adjustment issues and misunderstandings.

There are several ways on how to learn English.

Enroll in ESL classes

English as a Second Language (ESL) class, also known as English as a Foreign Language (EFL) class, is an English language program for non-English native individuals who want to improve their English language skills, especially in the macro skills. There are different classes that focus on different language skills depending on the needs of the students. Generally, the courses teach conversational English, grammar, reading, listening, comprehension, writing, and vocabulary.

Since almost everyone has smartphones, there are actually apps that can be downloaded to improve one’s English language skills. The most recommended ones are FluentU English, Memrise, Google Translate, and many more. Dictionaries and e-books may also be downloaded.

Watch and Listen to English Materials

Being exposed to the target language will help a student to study English in a more effective way. When you watch series, movies, or other shows provide realistic contexts of the English language. Also, one may do the shadowing to technique wherein one would imitate how something is delivered. This would enhance a student’s English-speaking skills.

Learn from native speakers

When studying English as a second language, it will be helpful if a student is surrounded by native speakers like professors, classmates, friends, and neighbors among others. By doing so, this will improve their conversational skills and also make them learn the language in different contexts.
 There are more ways on how to improve a student’s English language skills. The most important thing is the openness to adapt the language and the confidence to use it in different situations.
